What is Toffee.Net?

Toffee.Net is a complete Website design, administration and hosting service aimed at small businesses, clubs and charities.

Why the daft name?

Life's too short to be too serious all the time. But that doesn't mean that we can't be serious about doing business on the Web. And it's not as stupid as some names you find on the Internet!

Toffee.Net is a name people will remember quite easily because it raises a smile. At the IBC exhibition in Amsterdam recently, I was representing two companies - Ormsby Electronics and Toffee.Net.
Toffee.Net definitely generated the most interest, and I distributed far more business cards than I had expected to.

It's not a big, faceless organisation, so it doesn't need a stuffy corporate name.

Where does the name come from, then?

It started one Christmas, when I first started posting to Usenet newsgroups. It seemed to be common practice to use a nickname instead of your real name, and to use either a modified version of your e-mail address, or a totally fictitious one in order to avoid Spam.

Being Christmas ... "bah, Humbug!" sprang to mind (I had for some years previously provided a basket of mint humbugs at Christmas in the office where I worked). Carrying on the sweety theme, Chambers' dictionary defines a humbug as "a lump of toffee" ... so humbug@toffee.net is what I became. It sort of stuck. :-)

Any more hideous puns?
